Our Story

The owners, Richard and Tina Boutall, married August 2011 in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Richard was a Dairy farmer in Manitoba, Canada and Tina, a store manager, in southern Ohio.  They met via a mutual friend a few years previous and love blossomed. Then came the question of where to live? The two decided that Tina's home state of Kentucky was best but while the US immigration service made up their minds about Richard, the couple lived in Canada.  This gave Richard time to sell his Canadian farm.

During his 20 years of farming Richard realized many things were wrong with the agricultural system and sought to rectify them on his farm within the conventional farming paradigm. These measures helped a little but they did not improve profitability or welfare of livestock and crops to the degree that he would have liked. Then, he read an article by a farmer, Joel Salatin, from Virginia and all the questions and answers started coming together.  Then, Richard recalled a book given to him by his father when he first set his mind to farming called, The Farming Ladder, by George Henderson.

For the last four years, Richard has been researching organic and sustainable farming and implementing ideas on his farm in Canada.  The Boutalls are putting those ideas into practice at Brookhill Farm in Ghent, Kentucky and hope you will join them on this journey of land healing and sustainable agriculture.
